About/contact

Hello, my name is YoungJu Kim. I am an illustrator and designer based in Vienna, VA. Growing up in a large family in South Korea, I have enjoyed listening to my aunts’ folk tales, reading books, drawing, and creating paper dolls.

I’ve spent nine years as a freelance artist for a licensing company, showcasing works at major retailers like Target, Walmart, and DaySpring, following graduation from the Savannah College of Art and Design with an M.F.A. in Illustration.

My images are often executed in a water-based medium/digital on wood, and I use wood grain as an element of the composition. It’s turning ‘abstract’ into ‘figurative form.’ Thus, my paintings finally engage with a particular sensitivity and create a unique dream-like mood.

My works were also featured in the COEX Winter Festival, Gelsinger Licensing Group, Grain Valley Publishing, Applied Arts magazine, Rosengart Gallery Fine Art & Gifts, Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrator(SCBWI) Southern Breeze, Illustration West by Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, CMYK, 3×3 Children’s Show Annual, Creative Quarterly, What’s Up Annapolis, Savannah College of Art and Design, Telfair Art Fair, and so on. I worked for American Greetings, Working Class Studio SCAD, and Deep Center as an intern as well.
